Press ▶ to play the year, or drag the month slider: the glow shows where each species is recorded that month, and dashed lines are real GPS and geolocator tracks of individual birds. Drag or flick to turn the globe; it never turns by itself.
The glow comes from openly licensed GBIF records (CC0 and CC BY 4.0 only). Bird watchers are not spread evenly (Europe and North America have far more), so by default each cell is divided by all bird records in that cell and month. Read how the map is made and the data credits.
